Carat is a unit of measurement used to weigh diamond and gemstones. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams, or 0.2 grams. Large diamonds are rare and have a greater value per carat. Price of a diamond rises exponentially to its size.

| Diamond color |
| Color grading for "colorless" or white diamonds involves deciding how
closely a stone's body color approaches colorlessness. Most diamonds
naturally occur with a trace of yellow or brown body color. Colorless
diamonds act like prisms, separating white light passing through it into
a wide spectrum of colors, causing a scintillating effect called "fire"
which gives a diamond its brilliance. The whiter the diamond, better the
fire. |
| The industry standard grading for diamond color is done referring to the
GIA s professional scale that grades diamonds on a scale of D to Z. The
scale begins with the highest rating of D for colorless, and travels
down the alphabet to grade diamonds with traces of very faint yellowish
or brownish hue. |

| Cut |
| Cut does not mean shape of a diamond; it refers to the reflective
and refractive quality of the stone. When white light enters a diamond
it refracts, and disperses into different hues creating a scintillating
effect called "fire". This gives a diamond its brilliance. Thus a well
cut diamond allows light to enter, refracts light on its facets and
reflects it back, exhibiting scintillation or fire of the diamond. In a
poorly cut diamond, light enters through the table and due to the poor
refractive index of the facets, light "leaks" out of the gem thus
exhibiting a low brilliance. |
| Although, the variance in the proportions between an Ideal Cut and a
Poor Cut can be difficult to discern, the industry standard for grading
Cut helps in determining the quality of the Cut. |

| A cut can be classified as: |
| Excellent Cut/Ideal Cut - This Cut maximizes the brilliance of a
diamond. These stones exhibit high scintillation or fire and are one of the finest diamonds that
money can buy. |
| Very Good Cut - Usually cut to maximize the size of the
diamond, a Very Good Cut stone falls a little short of the preferred
diamond proportions. A Very Good Cut Diamond reflects most of the light
that enters the stone, creating a good deal of brilliance. |
| Good Cut - When a cutter chooses to create the maximum
possible size diamond out of the rough crystal, the proportions of the
stone fall out of the ideal range. These stones reflect much of the
light that enters them exhibiting a good brilliance. Ideal choice for
shoppers who want to stay in budget without sacrificing quality or
beauty. |
| Fair and Poor Cut - A diamond in this grade reflects only a
small proportion of the light that enters it. These gems are created to
maximize carat weight over other considerations. |

| Clarity |
| |
Diamonds are extracted from the crust of the earth and they
naturally occur with flaws. Diamond clarity refers to the quality of
diamonds relating to the existence of internal flaws called inclusions,
or external flaws called blemishes.
Inclusions can be classified as the presence of a foreign material or
structural imperfections such as tiny cracks that can appear whitish or
cloudy. Blemishes are the surface defects of a diamond such as chips,
nicks, polishes, grain boundaries etc. However, for grading purposes all
flaws are called inclusions. The number, size, color, relative location
and visibility of inclusions can all affect the relative clarity of a
diamond. A clarity grade is assigned based on the overall appearance of
the diamond under 10x magnification.

Polish | | |
|
Polish enhances the intensity of light reflected from, or refracted into
and out of a diamond. Diamonds with poor polish are less brilliant
because they have microscopic polish lines that blur the surface of the
diamond. Polish of a diamond, as per GIA´s grading can be classified as: |

Excellent: No polish lines or marks are visible when the
diamond is viewed under 10x magnification. The brilliance of diamond
with excellent polish is noticeably different.

Very Good: Represents diamonds that have one or two minor
groupings of transparent polish lines that are visible under 10x
magnification.
|
Good: Some areas consisting of minor transparent lines are
visible under 10x magnification. Occasional white polish lines may also
be visible, but very limited in number.
|
Fair: Several transparent or white polish lines are visible.
Minor burn marks (visible only under 10x magnification) may be present.
|
Poor: A significant number of heavy white polish lines and/or
burn marks are visible on the surface of the diamond. Luster is minimal
and the diamond may appear to be slightly cloudy in appearance.

| Symmetry |
| |
|
Symmetry refers to the alignment of the facets of a diamond. Symmetry reflects
the exactness of the shape and arrangement of facets of the diamond.
When a diamond is polished, it may be slightly off round, have
variations in girdle thickness, tilting of the table, and off centering
the table or the culet etc.GIA has graded symmetry as: |

| Angara Rating |
| |
| Angara Rating refers to a unique, proprietary formula devised by
Angara to determine a diamond s value. |
| |
| Traditionally, diamond´s quality has been judged based on 4 Cs-
color, cut, clarity, and carat. According to Angara rating, the 4 Cs are
only a part of the picture not including other factors like size.
Similarly there are many factors that determine the quality of the
diamond such as: culet, fluorescence, girdle size, polish and symmetry
apart from color, clarity and cut. |

Angara rating analyzes a variety of different criteria including
color, clarity, cut, culet, fluorescence, girdle size, polish and
symmetry; accesses them as a whole to rate the quality of a diamond. The
result is one score, on a scale of 0-100 that determines a diamond's
overall quality, much like a Wine Spectator rating, or a Zagat Rating
for wine (though those are on 30 points.)

| Fluorescence
|
| |
| Fluorescence is an effect that is seen in some diamonds when they are exposed to long-wave ultraviolet light (such as the lighting frequently seen in dance clubs) or fluorescent light (such as the lighting frequently seen in a showroom). Under most lighting conditions, this fluorescence is not detectable to the eye. A diamond that has fluorescence has the tendency to emit soft colored glow when subjected to ultraviolet light. Diamonds with very strong fluorescence may appear to be less brilliant or even cloudy when exposed to UV lights. But such diamonds are very rare.
While most gemologists prefer diamonds without this effect, some people enjoy it. It is a matter of what appeals to the aesthetics.
