The history of rings goes back to the earliest Human civilizations.  Initially, when a pair was "wed", they used to tie up the couple together with grass ropes.  This modified itself to ropes around the wrists, and then, to symbolize the created bond, around the finger.  Modern use of rings has evolved much since then, with numerous reasons attributed to wearing a ring.  While engagements and weddings are the most popular ring traditions, graduation, promise, friendship, New Mother/ New Baby rings, anniversary, Quinceanera and Sweet 16 are various special occasions that qualify for ring giving.  Also, women of the millennium enjoy the freedom to purchase their own rings that they will immensely enjoy.

Ring Types

Rings are primarily classified by the occasion at which they will be given or worn.  Following are the broad classification of rings based on settings or stones.
  • Bands: Bands are the simplest form of rings.  A flat band consists of a strip of metal that is made into a circle joining the ends together just as two lives are joined as one.

  • Solitaire Rings: are set with a single large gemstone as a centerpiece, usually somewhat large.  These are classed according to the shape of the gemstone set in the ring or the shank type used.  For example; round, marquise, oval, cushion or square and split shank, curved shank or crossover etc.

  • Eternity Rings: are rings with gemstones, of the same cut and size, set in one row all around the ring.  The stones are usually round or square, and the setting is usually either claws or a channel.  When the stones do not continue around the entire ring, but stop halfway around the circle, it is called a half-eternity ring.

  • Cluster Rings: are rings with a group of stones in a cluster setting, forming the focal point of the ring.  The combined effect is that of a single large gemstone, from a slight distance.  The cluster setting usually consists of one large stone (usually round or oval) in the center surrounded with several smaller stones.

  • Three Stone Rings: are set with three gemstones; a larger one as the centerpiece and two smaller ones by its either side.  This could be a combination of ruby and diamonds, or only rubies.

  • Five Stone Rings: are self explanatory, as these are set with five gemstones in a row, with or without diamonds.

Gemstone Shape

These are further classed based upon the type of cut of a particular gemstone and also the setting that has been used for the gemstones.  Gemstones are cut to maintain maximum weight while exhibiting optimal color and brilliance and since each gem is unique, there aren't any set standards to define an ideal proportion for maximizing beauty.  A well cut gem is able to handle the play of light; the gem comes alive and sparkles as light waltzes across the facets.  Don't be confuse that cut refers to the shape.  Shape refers to the physical form of the stone.  And cut determines how well the shape has been executed.  Most common and popular cuts of gemstones in rings are as under:

Ring Settings

  • Bar Setting: Bar a piece of metal set between gemstones which holds them securely in place is called a bar.

  • Bezel Setting: A bezel setting has a metal rim that fits around the gemstone at the circumference and securely holds it in place.

  • Half Bezel Setting: This setting has the bezel formed as a semi-circle.

  • Channel Setting: The channel setting is a groove in a metal band that holds a row of stones between two parallel bars.  The stones are next to each other without any metal bars between them.

  • Invisible Setting: The invisible setting showcases several rows of stones without any metal which interrupts the pattern.  The gemstones are set with special grooves cut into them into a band.  The gemstones rest secure in the band, and the metal underneath them is invisible.

  • Pave Setting: This setting has tiny balls (10, 14, 18 k or platinum) to secure many gemstones in a pattern.  Pave settings create the look of a path or field of gemstones.  It has a high sparkle factor.

  • Prong Setting: A prong is a metal claw that protrudes from the band to clasp the gemstone and hold it secure.  It is the most widely used setting.  Prongs are best suited for showcasing large gemstones.  For solitaire rings, usually four to six prongs are used.  The number of prongs relates to the current style, security of the stone and ring design.  There is also a special prong called a "v" prong, often used for princess shape stones.

Angara Tips for Ring Sizing:

A wider band can be worn more loosely.  Large knuckled hands ought to wear slightly loose rings, while slimmer knuckled hands will require a tighter ring.  It is advisable that some rings not be reset.  It is so important to select the correct size in the beginning.  An excellent method for measurement is to find a ring that is a little smaller than the second knuckle of the finger.  This ensures that the fit is comfortable but will not slide off the finger.

We recommend that fingers be measured for size at the end of the day, when they are at their largest diameters.  Factors affecting ring sizes include menstrual cycle, water-retention, exercise, and temperature in relation to weather.

Angara advice: Ring styles often change over time.  There are always trends that rule or retire.  Ring selection should be based on the personal preference of the woman who will be wearing it and looking at it daily.  It needs to put a smile on her face.

A classical multi-purpose ring is the eternity band.  It can be worn as either a wedding or anniversary ring.  A woman can wear just one or stack them as many Hollywood celebrities are currently doing.

Think ahead to the wedding band options.  Will she be wearing the engagement ring on the same hand as the wedding band?  Some women wear them on different hands.  If she wants to wear them on the same hand do you want them to fit tightly together?  Would you like a little space between the two rings?  It is all about personal preference.  We can custom make a band that will curve around almost any engagement ring.  It is best to order it at the time you order the engagement ring.  They will perfectly fit together and can be your own creative creation.
