Dhanteras or Dhanatrayodashi marks the beginning of the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali. Literally, Dhanteras means ‘wealth’ (Dhan) and ‘13th’ (tera). It is considered as a day for celebrating wealth and is marked on the 13th day of the Hindu calendar month of Kartik.

One of the most important rituals of this auspicious day, which falls on November 5th this year, is buying jewelry. But do you know why and how this practice came into being? Let’s dig deeper…

The legend behind Dhanteras

According to Hindu mythology, buying jewelry during Dhanteras brings in good luck and prosperity. The legend behind this festival focuses on the 16-year-old son of King Hima. It was predicted that he would die due to a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. However, on that fateful day, his wife illuminates the house with several lamps and lays gold and silver coins and ornaments in a big heap at the entrance of their chamber. All through the night she continues singing and telling stories.

When Yama, the God of death, arrives in the form of a serpent, the lights blind his eyes and he is unable to enter the prince’s chamber. He spends the entire night sitting on the heap of coins and listening to the sweet songs before slithering away silently the next morning.

Another legend revolves around the battle between gods and demons, when Dhanavantri – the physician of the gods emerges carrying a pot of elixir. As per this mythological tale, the word Dhanteras comes from the name Dhanavantri, which means the divine doctor.
