It’s April, when the spring is in full bloom and the birth stone for this month, diamond, is just as beautiful. Everyone just cannot help being mesmerized by the dazzling rainbow of colors reflected in a skillfully cut diamond which is the mystique of this gemstone. There used to be a time when it was an adornment of only the royalty and there are so many tales of diamonds and their romance, mystery, and passion.
The ancient Greeks believed that the fire of a diamond reflected the flame of everlasting love. It is believed that the tradition of presenting the diamond as a promise of marriage started in the year 1477, when Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave a diamond ring to his fiancée, Mary of Burgundy. In addition to this, wearing the engagement ring on the third finger of the left hand is rooted in the Egyptian belief that the “vena amoris,” or vein of love, runs from the heart to the top of this finger.
Talking about the properties of diamonds, this gemstone got its name from the Greek word “adamastos,” which means “invincible.” So, in simple words diamonds are forever. Another belief is that diamond brings wealth and happiness as well as protection to its owner. In ancient times it was believed that diamonds hold magical powers. Some people thought that they may be splinters of stars fallen to earth, while others thought they are tears of the gods, or perhaps crystallized lightening. Interestingly, diamonds were worn into battle by kings, as a symbol of strength and courage, and kept as talismans against poisoning, devils, and phantoms.
The enticing beauty of this gem has led to it also becoming the object of greed and desire, and history is rife with stories of diamond theft. There is also a legend that diamond powder is effective for poisoning but experts feel it probably originated to discourage diamond smugglers from swallowing the gems.
But it was not until the 16th century that the true beauty of the Diamond was revealed. This is the time when gemstone cutting and polishing techniques were perfected. Earlier it was considered taboo to modify the original state of a Diamond. Today, the value and appeal of this stone depends largely upon how skillfully it is cut and faceted.
Now, the diamonds are flashed by movie stars at awards ceremonies while they also sparkle in the modest diamond engagement ring of a young bride. So, if diamond is your birthstone it is the time to be indulgent, and get a piece of diamond jewelry as you are worth it!
