Wood

The element of wood is also associated with trees and signifies abundance, harmony and creativity. Since blue-green ‘qing’ is the colour of the element wood, an emerald or a London blue topaz can beautifully represent it. While the emerald is the perfect lush green gem for the season of spring, the London blue topaz combines the ‘qing’ colours of the sky and the verdant mountains.

Fire

The colour red is associated with the fire element and is also the most significant colour in Chinese culture. Just like rubies, red represents passion, enthusiasm, wealth, prosperity and happiness and is believed to ward off evil spirits and negative energies. Chinese legends state that rubies originated from Buddha’s tears and are one of the most revered gemstones.

Earth

The colour of citrine, yellow is the second most important colour in Chinese culture. Corresponding with the element earth, yellow also signifies balance, the centre of everything and the generation of the yin and the yang. Yellow is most commonly teamed with red. It represents creativity, intellect, true wisdom and success – the reason why Chinese legends also call citrine as ‘the stone of success’. Its yellowish golden hue is vibrant, cheerful and strikingly beautiful.

Metal

Determination, ambition, progress, persistence and righteousness represent the element of metal. The corresponding colour is white. It signifies brightness, purity, innocence and fulfilment. White pearls or opals are beautiful gems that relate to this element and jewellery pieces studded with them look charming and elegant. If you are a diamond person, you can also opt for diamond jewellery.

Water

Corresponding to the element of water, black is essentially a neutral colour. It has been honoured by the ancients and is related to wisdom, mental strength and aptitude. Black gems such as black onyx and black diamonds can be worn to imbibe the element of water.

So, ring in the Spring New Year this February 5th with firecrackers, lion dances, reunion dinners, endless wishes and sparkling gifts. Guo Nian Hao!
