When it comes to visually stunning black gemstones, the black onyx rules the roost. But is this jewel durable enough to be flaunted daily?

That’s what this post is going to talk about.

Let’s start with some background

The black onyx is a form of silicate layered chalcedony, which is a type of quartz. It features a cryptocrystalline structure that consists of intergrowths of quartz and moganite.

Besides its gorgeous black hue, this stone is also prized for its slightly translucent to opaque surface, which gives it a distinct personality and makes it stand apart from the crowd.

Measuring durability

A gemstone’s durability refers to its ability to withstand damage. Needless to say, the stronger a stone is, the more suitable it is for frequent or everyday wear.

To better understand the durability of various minerals and gems, German geologist and mineralogist, Friedrich Mohs devised a scale for the same purpose in the year 1822. The Mohs scale of mineral hardness is used even today, and it rates each gem from 1 (most malleable) to 10 (most durable), depending on its ability to resist scratches.

Back to the main question, is the Black Onyx durable?

To a certain extent, yes, it is.

The black onyx has a rating of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, which means that while it isn’t extremely tough, like a ruby, it isn’t very delicate either. So essentially, you can definitely wear this gem very often, provided you take good care of it. Pairing it with the right metal will also be helpful for the same.

Which metal should you opt for?

Platinum is certainly a great option for the black onyx, due to the following reasons…

  • Toughness: Blessed with excellent density, platinum is quite a tough gem that is highly resistant to dents and scratches.
  • Richness: This metal features a soft sheen which teamed up with the black onyx can draw focus to its hue and add a touch of luxury to the overall piece.
  • Rarity: It is five times scarcer than gold, which makes it a valuable possession.
  • Hypoallergenic: As it is used in its pure form, the metal is safe for those with sensitive skin.

Which setting works well for the Black Onyx?

Protective settings like the bezel and channel are fabulous choices for the black onyx. They work by covering the edges of the stone and creating a protective barrier.

Extra care tips

  • Store this gem in a velvet lined case away from other accessories to prevent scratches.
  • Do not expose your stone to harsh chemicals present in cleaners, sanitizers, cosmetics, perfumes, etc.
  • Avoid exposing this gemstone to extremely high temperatures as that could possibly dull its colour over a period of time.
  • To ensure the longevity of your black onyx, get it professionally cleaned at least once a year.

Eye-catching and intriguing, the black onyx jewellery never fails to steal the spotlight. And while it may not be the most durable stone out there, the tips and tricks mentioned above will definitely help you take better care of it.
