If you’re in the market for a gemstone that radiates sensuality, charisma, and a touch of intrigue, then the amethyst should be on the top of your wish list. That said, while several factors make this jewel swoon-worthy, its durability is often a point of concern for many.

If you find yourself agreeing to this then don’t fret. This article will give you all the information you need to put your mind at ease.

Let’s Begin with Some Background

Also known as the February birthstone, the amethyst derives its name from the Greek word ‘amethystos’, which means ‘to not be inebriated’. So the stone was originally used to keep one sober. And while all this is a myth, the association with the stone’s name has definitely added to its allure.

This jewel can be found all over the world and is available in several shades of purple ranging from lilac to a reddish-purple hue. It is typically eye-clean, which means that it does not have any flaws that are easily visible to the naked eye. This makes the amethyst a phenomenal choice for large, intricate styles like vintage rings and cocktail rings.

Does it Chip Easily?

Not exactly!

With a rating of 7 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness and zero gemstone cleavage, the amethyst is a relatively durable gem. That said, the stone can chip or crack if not handled with care.

Important Note: If you intend on rocking this gem daily, we recommend opting for either a channel or bezel setting. Their design protects the gem by surrounding it with metal that creates a barrier between your jewel and any accidental damage.

How Do you Take Care of Amethysts?

  1. Storage matters: Placing your amethyst in a compartment with other pieces could result in it getting scratched by harder jewels. Furthermore, excessive exposure to heat and light could dull its color over a period of time.
As such, it is important to store your amethyst jewelry in a velvet-lined case or a soft pouch, away from your other stones. Also, keep this in a cool, dark area.
  2. Avoid chemicals: Chemicals present in your cleaners, hair sprays, cosmetics, perfumes, and swimming pools can cause damage to this gemstone. So make it a point to protect your amethyst jewelry from the same.
  3. DIY cleaning: Dip your amethyst jewelry in a bowl filled with ultra-mild soap water solution. Next, dip a soft towel into this and use it to gently scrub away all the dirt and grime that may have accumulated over a period of time. Once sufficiently clean, hold the accessory under running water until all the soap is washed away. Wipe away the excess moisture with a soft, lint-free cloth and leave aside to air dry.

Note: Avoid using ultrasonic and steam cleaners for your amethyst jewelry.

Conclusion

While the amethyst doesn’t chip easily, it is certainly not immune to damage. But by following the care tips mentioned above, you are sure to end up with a piece that will look beautiful for years to come.
