A symbol of positivity, decisiveness, and strength, the black onyx has won many hearts (and fashion choices) over the years. This, unfortunately, has resulted in several imitation pieces being sold in the market today. So how do you tell if a black onyx is real? Read on to find the answer to your question and a lot more useful information.

What is a black onyx?

Showcasing opaque transparency with a waxy luster, this jewel is one of the rarest varieties of onyx stones currently mined. In fact, natural black onyxes are so rare that most of the pieces sold today are actually grey chalcedonies that have been heat-treated to develop the required hue. However, they share the same chemical structure as natural black onyxes and therefore are 100% real.

An interesting fact about this jewel is that it was once believed to have a demon trapped within. According to the legend, the stone would only release the demon at night. And during this time, it would cause havoc in the neighborhood and sow the seeds of discord amongst people, especially couples.

When you buy a black onyx ring, rest assured as these myths aren’t true at all.

Did you know?

Luckily, the myth mentioned above wasn’t the only one attached to the black onyx. It is said that many people often wore real black onyx jewelry, such as rings and pendants, throughout the day because they believed that this gemstone could store their memories and replay the same through the process of psychometrics.

Real black onyxes are typically defined by their opaque surface and may appear glossy when polished. This look cannot be easily replicated by the glass, which will appear very shiny instead. However, following the above four steps, you can easily differentiate a fake jewel from a genuine black onyx.

Identify a Real Black Onyx FAQs

  • Can you wear your black onyx ring in the shower?
You should ideally avoid doing this for two main reasons. First, the chemicals present in your shower products can eat away the gem’s surface, thereby causing severe damage in the long run. Not only that, but the soapy texture of the cleanser can cause your ring to loosen, fall off your finger, and get damaged when hitting the ground.
  • Can you sleep while wearing a black onyx ring?
We do not recommend this because you might accidentally knock the stone against a hard surface (like your headboard) while you sleep and accidentally damage it.
  • Can you wear your black onyx ring in the sun?
    Yes, you can.
  • Is the black onyx a precious gem?
The answer is no. The black onyx is a semi-precious gemstone.
