Differences between the onyx and obsidian gemstones

1) Definition

Black onyx: The black onyx is a semi-precious jewel known worldwide for its translucent to opaque surface. It gets its name from the Greek word ‘ὄνυξ’ which translates to ‘claws’ or ‘fingernails.’

Obsidian: The lesser-known jewel of the two, the obsidian is one gemstone whose fame is slowly gaining momentum in the fashion world. It can be found in several varieties and typically features a glassy surface.

2) Chemical structure

Black onyx: For the unaware, the black onyx is a type of silicate layered chalcedony which is a form of quartz.

Obsidian: Unlike its semi-precious gem counterpart, the obsidian is not a mineral. It is volcanic lava that has cooled off and turned into black volcanic glass.

3) Mining location

Black onyx: Currently, the gem can be found in different parts of the world including the U.S., Brazil, Pakistan, Yemen and Uruguay.

Obsidian: Similarly, obsidian is mined in different regions all over the world. This includes the Western U.S., New Zealand, Mexico, the Canary Islands, Armenia and Argentina.

4) Durability

Black onyx: This relatively durable jewel features a 6.5-7 rating on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. That makes timeless onyx ring perfect pick for spicing up your celebratory attires.

Obsidian: This gemstone is slightly less durable and has a 5 out of 10 rating on the Mohs scale.

5) Birthstone month

Black onyx: One of the most common questions we receive is ‘whether or not the black onyx is a birthstone?’ It is! For the uninitiated, the onyx is the December month’s birthstone.

Obsidian: The jewel, on the other hand, is the November birthstone.
